La Citrine: pierre du mois de novembre

Citrine: November's birthstone

Citrine belongs to the quartz family, just like amethyst, which explains why these two stones are very closely related geologically. Citrine was long called "yellow quartz" before it took its official name in the 16th century, from the Latin citrus which means "lemon", because of its color.

With a rating of 7/10 on the Mohs scale (stone hardness scale), citrine is distinguished by its amber yellow color reminding us of the color of honey. Its color can even vary from light yellow to light orange.

Did you know that the most famous citrine set is probably that of the Grand Duchess of Luxembourg, Stéphanie de Lannoy, who wears for special occasions – especially at her wedding – a tiara set with pearls and citrines, with the necklace and earrings matching the set?

Citrine deposits are frequently linked to those of amethysts . They are located mainly in India, Australia, Spain and South America, particularly in Brazil and Uruguay. Brazil is the main producer of citrine and is recognized for having the most beautiful citrines in the world in the states of Rio Grande do Sul and Minas Gerais in the south of the country.

Traditionally, citrine is given on the 13th wedding anniversary and this stone is attributed to those born in November, Sagittarius and Scorpio. This stone is known to be the stone of success because it promotes abundance and is full of positive energy.

In ancient times, citrine was found as a semi-precious stone as early as 300 BC in ancient Greece. They dedicated this stone to the goddess of agriculture and harvests, Demeter.

Natural citrine is a relatively rare gemstone; it is even very often confused with yellow topaz – very close in terms of color. Despite its relative rarity, citrine is a stone that remains more affordable than yellow sapphire or yellow diamond and is therefore highly prized by designers and jewelry creators.
